Our Story

Have you ever bought one of those Basil plants you can get in supermarkets, excited about the idea of having fresh Basil right from the kitchen counter whenever you want? How well did that go? Because to our co-founder Sabrina it seemed, no matter what she did and how much she nurtured the Basil, it would give up on her and die.

This very much frustrated Sabrina, because she loves the idea of having fresh food from home and small plants like Basil or Cherry Tomatoes would be perfect for her small London apartment. Probably it was not only so much about her not being blessed with a green thumb, but also not having enough light, too little or too much water, wrong room temperature or any other possible reason there may be.

Putting her hobby gardening career aside for a while, Sabrina travelled to China for her MBA and met her to be co-founder Andre. During one of their courses they’ve heard for the first time about hydroponics and how NASA uses it to grow food in space.

Both obsessed with food, they started discussing over a beer or two in some pub in Shanghai about how awesome it would be to have easy-to-use hydroponic indoor gardens for home where anyone could grow food on the push of a button no matter the size of the apartment, no matter the season. Almost like having a personal farmer sitting on your kitchen table!

Together they started to research about the topic and how they could make this dream a reality… and this is how Gartenzwerg was born.
